REA welcomes DECC biomethane tariff review
Biomethane ‘has a major role to play in greening the gas grid, says REA
The Renewable Energy Association (REA) says it welcomes the publication of the DECC’s biomethane tariff review. The industry offers ‘greater value for money for the taxpayer’ with further cost savings likely in the future.
9 December 2014 – DECC has today published the outcome of its biomethane tariff review. The review was launched in the summer to address fears that the current tariffs may be over-rewarding large projects. The consultation received considerable input from across the industry, as the original document could have led to far more drastic impacts on almost all projects.
REA Chief Executive Dr Nina Skorupska said: “Biomethane is one of the success stories of the Renewable Heat Incentive and has a major role to play in greening the gas grid. From almost nowhere two years ago, we have now 10 projects operational, with more still in the pipeline. The current tariff rates are already competitive with many other technologies and further cost savings are likely as the industry deploys at scale.”
“The industry has worked closely with Government over the last few months to ensure that these proposals drive a long-term sustainable industry, at ever greater value for money for the taxpayer.”
